Prepollency (archaic) - a state of superior power, weight or influence

We've brought back this old world to bring the ultimate medieval strategy experience to your tabletop.

A mysterious obelisk has arisen and begun wreaking havoc on the lands. But one thing is certain: that can't be good!

As the ruler of these lands, you send out an expedition to investigate. Tread carefully, though, for you are not the only party interested in uncovering the secrets of the Obelisk.

Comprehensive rules

Initial setup:

The game is played with either 2 or 4 players on a 15x15 square grid, with each player starting in a corner. For 2-player games, players must set up on opposite corners. Each player has their own corner for a 4-player game.

The first 2x2 square of a player’s corner forms their castle, or home base. It begins the game surrounded by rings of troops: 5 archers, 7 cavalry, and 9 infantry.

For example, a 4-player game would start like this:

A for archers, C for cavalry, I for infantry and O for obelisk.

Movement:

Players can move up to two pieces on their turn:
 - Infantry pieces can move one space in any direction
 - Cavalry can move up to three spaces in a diagonal direction
 - Archers can move up to three spaces horizontally or vertically.
 - The Khan, once acquired, can move any amount of spaces in any direction (horizontally, vertically or diagonally)

Players can also "hold the line" by moving no pieces, essentially skipping their turn.

The Obelisk & the Khan:

The cross made by the centre 5 squares is known as the Obelisk.

If a player ends their turn with pieces on all five spaces that make up the Obelisk, they are rewarded with a special piece called the Khan. It will spawn in the back corner of said player's base (one of the corners of the map).

Players are only ever allowed one Khan on the field, but they can always recapture the Obelisk to get another if their first one dies.

Combat:

Moving onto a square occupied by an enemy will kill the opposing troop and give you control of the tile.

Rounds:

Players can roll a dice, flip a coin, or choose whatever other means they like to determine who goes first. Turns are then taken in clockwise order around the table.

A round is complete when each player has taken a turn.

How to win:

The Obelisk presents the main way to win. If a player controls all 5 squares that make up The Obelisk for three rounds, they win.

Alternatively, a player can be removed from the game if all of the squares making up their home base are captured by other players. It does not necessarily have to be just one player's troops occupying the home base; any mixture of opposing forces fully occupying your home base will eliminate you. The last player standing will be declared the winner.

Install instructions

4-player game:

The full set of pieces required for a 4-player game is in just one file called prepollency_printsheet.pdf: 9 map segments, 88 tokens and 16 spare tokens just in case.

The map is split into 9 different sections in this file so that it can be printed on a4 sheets, straight from the home printer, but still be a reasonable size.

Simply print out that file and use scissors (with caution) to cut out the map sections and tokens following the dotted lines. Stick the 9 map segments together with sticky tape and you’re good to get started.

2-player game:

If you want to play a 2-player game, there are two recommended options:

- If you intend on exclusively playing a 2-player game, follow the above steps but replace 2 of the corner pieces with home bases for empty segments from the prepollency_extras.pdf file. Be sure to only print the 2 desired sheets from that file, since it has 10 pages total.

- Use your imagination! Set up the 4-player game as above, pick your two opposite corners and colours to play as, then pretend the other two aren’t there.

If you would like a printed version of the rules, then print as many copies of prepollency_rulesheet as you see fit.
